2 years under the Victorian Integrated Programme – A summary

October 22, 2006

It has been 2 years in the IP and I would like take this chance to reflect upon my results.

A better view of the marks, with the bottom half of the graph chopped off.
The y-axis should read from 50 to 100.

Subject Highest ever marks per subject Lowest ever marks per subject Highest ever marks per subject – Lowest ever marks per subject
Language Arts 71.5 57.6 13.9
Mathematics 89.0 61.0 28.0
Social Studies 78.2 58.8 19.4
Physics 83.6 63.3 20.3
Biology 81.3 68.5 12.8
Chemistry 81.0 54.0 27.0

So actually, you can see that my marks vary quite a lot. Lets do a brief anaylsis of each subject.

Language Arts: My weakest subject throughout though it gradually improved at the end. In fact, the highest I got for language arts (71.5) is much lower than the highest mark I got for other subejcts, with social studies being the next closest at 5th position, with a mark of 78.2. Nevertheless, I am indeed very glad to have an A1 for it for my 06EOY, because that was my last chance to get it.

Mathematics: Jerky start in the first year with falls and bumps all along and somewhat stabilised near the end. The 06EOY was far too low, considering the top student (PRC) got 100 marks, and the top Singaporean was at 97 (if I am not wrong). Could be, and should have been, better.

Social Studies: Almost consistently in 5th position for marks after language arts though what I got for 06CA1 is worth cheering about. In fact, social studies was the worst subject in 3 timeframes, 05CA2, 06CA2 and 06EOY, the most “worst subject” for any subject. Managed to eke out a A2 by 0.5 mark in 06EOY with special thanks to my social studies teacher Mr. Yang, who took the effort to browse through the paper again and awarded a mark. This resulted in all subjects having distinction in 06EOY.

Physics: 05 was badly done though because I found the cirriculum somewhat challenging. Marks increased due to a more easy syllabus in 06. While 06CA1 and 06CA2 seemed high, the marks could have been at least 5-20 marks higher if not for the projects and practicals; I actually got lowest in class for a physics project that occupied 60% for 06CA2, though I got full marks for the other 40% component.

Biology: One thing, if any, I brought away from the IP, would be an interest in biology. I think that 05 grades for biology was good, and 06 was simply not up to standard; they should have been at least 5-10 marks higher. Nevertheless, I am still very contented. Special mention to biology as can be regarded as one of the most consistent subject if we consider the “Highest ever marks per subject – Lowest ever marks per subject” section to be an accurate gauge of consistency. The highest ever marks – lowest ever marks is a mere 12.8, and I wish to stress that they are all A, unlike langauge arts, which even though came in second at 13.9, was a spread of C5 to A1.

Chemistry: The lowest mark , and the only C6 I ever got in the entire 2 years, was for chemistry, during 05EOY. Actually, everyone did badly for that, and despite getting a C6, I was actually above average in the cohort for chemistry 05EOY. The teachers blamed the poor grade on chemistry being the last paper taken and that we were stressed out by the end of the examinations. I personally agree with the part on the paper being not too difficult, but disagree on the part that it was due to examination stress. I choose to attribute the fault either to ourselves (students) and partially, to the type of questions asked, which were indirect applications of our knowledge. 06EOY was much better even though the top scorer was having a mark of 90+.

Lets now do a brief overview of each timeframe.

05CA1: Poor marks for eveything, and 2 lowest marks can be found here. Lowest for mathematics and lowest for physics. Life in IP was starting, the cirriculum was the toughest here. Cant remember if I learnt anything useful for langauge arts during this period expect the 4 art philosophers: Dewey, Danto, Dickie and Bell.

05CA2: No sign of loosening up of the curriculum. Starting to get use to the style of teaching (at least for mathematics, chemistry and biology). I got my first C here, a C5 for social studies.

05EOY: Disatrous marks for mathematics and chemistry, and home to two lowest marks, for mathematics and chemistry (as expected). Slight improvement in langauge arts and unexpectedly above average results for social studies. I registered my worst mark here for chemistry, my only C6 for the 2 years.

06CA1: Just when you thought the IP was tough, the teachers started to relax the curriculum, well, except for language arts which I find the marking too stringent. Maybe it is just me. The other subjects, were unexpectedly well. With 3 subjects, social studies, biology and chemistry scoring the highest here. On the downside, I performed worst for language arts at this timeframe. Nevertheless, I managed to finish 9th position (tied with the 10th) and made it into the top 10 list (for the only time in the IP), as the only boy…Then the grades start falling.

06CA2: All the grades went downhill except for language arts (and mathematics) which jumped from C5 to A2. Worth mentioning was me getting highest for the political philosophy test and essay, which sort of attributed to this increase. Yes, political philosophy is my best language arts subject. Mathematics took a rise, maybe because of the introduction of the quiz system, which is simply giving marks away for free. My regret was not to get full marks (or anywhere near full marks) for the quiz component. One of the biggest drop was from social studies, which resembles the drop for socail studies in 05CA1 to 05CA2.

06EOY: The ultimate showdown. Woth mentioning was that I got distinction for ll 6 subjects, with language arts being suprising the most unexpected. While I know that the teachers are going to relax marking for language arts, I didnt know they were really that lenient. But who complains of having too many marks:). This means that I ahve the higest marks for language arts in this timeframe. Mathematics could have been better, was hoping for at least 80. This goes double for chemistry, which would be more sastifactionary if I got 80+. Biology had a collection of blunders which could bring me p to 80+. And physics, despite making many mistakes, was quite good, in fact, this grade was the highest I got for physics so far. Social studies has been mentioned in the above post on social studies.

Conclusion: coming soon
